Discover Victoria’s First Convoy
One hundred years ago, thousands of Victorians embarked from Port Melbourne bound for the battlefields of World War One. By the end of October 1914, 17 troopships had left Victorian shores carrying troops, nurses, technicians, horses, supplies and weaponry. This was Victoria’s First Convoy.
Now you can search embarkation rolls of those who left at this time – the database allows you to search by name or by other fields such as ships, regiment, address or occupation prior to enlistment and more.
Add your own data to a record such as an image or a story or complete any missing information using the ‘report an error’ button.
- Search for your ancestor by name to reveal a list of their service details including rank, battalion, date of birth, next of kin and fate.
- Link to the battalion to see other personnel connected with this group.
- Print a certificate which lists their service details.
- Many people have connections to World War One that they are not aware of – enter your current address and see if your house was once a place that a soldier or nurse called home.
- Search by name or service number to access a number of associated digitised records for your ancestor including their listing on the Roll of Honour, Commemorative Roll, nominal rolls plus view any honors and awards they received and photos, letters and diaries associated with their service.
- Search by a number of different variables including name, place of birth or place of enlistment.
- Add your own information to help ‘fill in the gaps’ and ensure that your ancestors details are recorded accurately and publicly.
Provides research tips and suggested resources for tracing information about individual soldiers and nurses who served during World War One.
A Multicultural Victoria
We recognize that Victoria is a diverse community and that many who now call Victoria their home have ancestors who served during World War One for a country other than Australia. We encourage you to research your connection and encourage you to share any useful online tools with us by emailing anzaccentenary@dpc.vic.gov.au.
