Student and Teacher Resources
There are many valuable resources available to students and teachers interested in researching, studying and undertaking project work in the lead up to, and during, the Anzac Centenary (2014 – 2018).
There is no better way to understand and appreciate the service and sacrifice of Australian service men and women than to explore family or community connections, read about Victoria’s courageous contributions to the war effort, or pay a visit to the Shrine of Remembrance.
Here are some of the resources available for teachers and students.
- The Shrine of Remembrance
- The Australian War Memorial
- Culture Victoria
- Victorian Collections
- History Teachers Association of Victoria
- Monash University
- ABC
The Shrine of Remembrance
A visit to the Shrine of Remembrance is a fascinating and inspiring learning experience. Students will gain valuable insights into Australian history and our evolving national identity.
Through the Education Program, students are encouraged to reflect on the personal qualities exemplified by the spirit of Anzac and remember the service and sacrifice of Australian service men and women in all conflicts and peace keeping operations.
Programs are held at the Shrine and also through Outreach, which is designed to meet the needs of regional, rural and low socioeconomic metropolitan schools.
All education programs are provided free of charge and are linked to AusVELS and Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Bookings are essential.
Teachers can also access specific resources to encourage learning in the lead up to and during the Anzac Centenary, including a series of videos to assist teachers, students and the wider community to conduct research into the lives, deaths and commemoration of Australian service personnel during the First World War (1914-1918).
The Australian War Memorial (AWM)
The AWM has produced an array of online resources and activities including two separate resources for primary and secondary school children on Australian military nursing and the diary of an Anzac soldier in the lead up and during the Gallipoli campaign.
Culture Victoria
Culture Victoria has produced three websites that allow users to listen to the stories of individual soldiers.
The first embraces stories from both world wars, the other two focus on Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux on the Western Front:
VICTORIAN COLLECTIONS
Victorian Collections is a central portal to the cultural treasures held by museums and galleries distributed across the State of Victoria.
Victorian Collections ensure historical war related artefacts are catalogued and also provide training to conserve and curate the materials in situ at RSL offices and small historical societies around Victoria.
History Teachers Association of Victoria
Teachers should visit the History Teachers Association of Victoria (HTAV) website for a wealth of World War I information.
This HTAV book contains summaries, sources and activities on Australia’s involvement in WWI.
Monash University
Monash University has produced 100 stories from men and women relating to the First World War, which includes the experiences of Aboriginal Australians.
ABC
The ABC has a 3D documentary site about the WWI Anzac Landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. It is a rich collection of historical evidence, images, recollections, modern commentary and interactive graphic illustrations of the places and events of the Anzac landing at Gallipoli.
Teachers should also visit the Resources section of this website for more information.
