Even as the First World War was ending, thoughts turned to those brave young men and women who would not be coming home.

Travelling to the gravesides of the war dead was out of the question for the overwhelming majority of those in grief.  Local war memorials, the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, and eventually, the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, were built in tribute to the men and women who fought for the freedom of generations to come. They became the place of Remembrance where the fallen could be honoured and remembered.

Throughout Australia, Remembrance Day remains a focus for the continuing recognition of the cost of war to Australians and of the courage among those who serve.

Throughout the Anzac Centenary (2014 – 2018) activities will bring new life to commemorations.
