300,000 Australians served on the Western Front – of these 132,000 were wounded and more than 46,000 were killed in action. Australians suffered through extreme conditions on the Western Front, both the soldiers on the front line and nurses and medical staff dealing with the aftermath of each battle. Back on the home-front, thousands of Victorian families grieved as the cost of the war was realised.

Victoria Remembers all those whose lives were touched by the Western Front campaign. The Victorian Government is committed to sharing the stories of all those who served and sacrificed and ensuring this history is safeguarded for future generations.  Through the Anzac Centenary Program 2014 – 2018, we are connecting Victorians of today to the history of 100 years ago.

We encourage you to engage your community in the Anzac Centenary by commemorating the Western Front campaign.

Key Messages to engage your community

Victoria Remembers all those whose lives were touched by the First World War.

Some of the heaviest losses to the AIF occurred during the Western Front campaign – over 46,000 were killed in action between 1916 and 1918, many more were wounded.

Many Victorians today have a connection to this history, including those whose forebears came from France, Canada, Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom or the many other countries caught up in the global conflict. The Victorian Government encourages everyone to remember those who were involved in the Western Front campaign and to commemorate their service and sacrifice.

As part of the Anzac Centenary Program 1914-1918, the Victorian Government will acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the key battles of the Western Front campaign.

You can get involved in the Anzac Centenary by learning more about this history at www.anzaccentenary.vic.gov.au/westernfront and by sharing your own story.
