WWI Stories – Charles Wilson

Professor John Wilson shares the story of his father, Charles Wilson.
Charles Wilson was born in Melbourne, and enlisted to serve in World War One in 1914. He was given the service number 173, and was part of the 7th Battalion. He embarked for Egypt on the Hororata. The 7th Battalion served at Gallipoli, Marselles, the Somme, Ypres and Calais. Charles was wounded during battle and spent time recovering in the United Kingdom.
In sharing his father’s World War One story during the Anzac Centenary, John emphasises the enormous significance the war had for the formation of national identity in Australia and New Zealand:
It has revealed and exemplified many of the traits of Australians today through the understanding of those who fought. They had a spirit of adventure, courage, rebellion and tenacity that could not be beaten in life or death. The mateship that now typifies our national character has come from the commitment and sacrifices made on the beaches of Gallipoli and on the Western Front. The future of our country lies i this spirit of unity and dedication and cannot be forgotten. Lest we forget.
