WWI Stories – George Schneider
Pamela Castle shares the story of her paternal grandfather, George Schneider.
George was my paternal grandfather. He served in 1 Pioneers Battalion AIF. Family stories tell of his task of tunneling during WWI, and he showed significant bravery on the battlefield.
He was mentioned in despatches from England – Winston Churchill has signed the original document in his role as Secretary of State of War.
George was poisoned with mustard gas and returned home with health issues as a result of his service.
Sadly, George passed away when I was quite young.
