Leone Fabre shares the story of Harold Henry Higgs.

Harold Henry Higgs enlisted in the 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment on 18 August 1914, and received the service number 17.

His regiment sailed for the Middle east on 19 October 1914, on board the HMAT Wiltshire, arriving in Egypt on 10 December 1914.

In May 1915, Harold’s regiment landed at what later became known as Anzac Cove. They did not initially fight as a regiment, but provided squadrons as reinforcements for infantry battalions and it was not until 11 June that the regiment reformed.

On 7 July 1916, Anzac Regiment was formed from B and D squadrons, the 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment and a squadron of New Zealand Otago mounted rifles.

On 20 January 1917, Harold was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s dispatch of the 13 November 1916 for distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty while at the Battle of Somme.

Harold received an injury to the shoulder on 30 June 1917, and by September 1918 he was on his way home onboard the Taranto. He married Ella Jeanette Blythome Syer on 9 July 1921 and they had seven children.

Harold died on 2 October 1959, and is buried at the Drouin cemetery. His brother, Arthur Geraldton Higgs, did not return from the war.

Harold is remembered as an incredibly brave man, who fought alongside his mates to serve his country.
