WWI Stories – John Leonard Orr

Mrs Patricia Rowe shares the story of her uncle, John Leonard Orr.

My Uncle John Leonard Orr, number 548 of the First Australian Division – 5th Battalion, enlisted in Prahran and sailed on the HMAT Orvieto on 21 October 1914 to the Gallipoli Peninsular.

Jock, as he was known, was an original Anzac and landed at dawn on 25 April 1915.  He was wounded on 11 May, transported to the 5th General Hospital at Alexandria on 14 May and, sadly, died the same day.

Jock is buried in the Presbyterian pavilion of the Chatby Cemetery near Alexandria. His grave number is 2005.
