WWI Stories – Frederick Henry Lyons

Mark Cameron tells the story of his great grandfather Frederick Henry Lyons.

My great-grandfather, Frederick Henry Lyons, was one of the first thousand men to enlist in the AIF in August 1914. His service number is 684.

He lived in Middle Park, only a short distance away from where he embarked on the HMAT Orveito on 21 October 1914. He fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front in France. He suffered during the war and was wounded on a number of occasions. However, he was one of the fortunate ones who was able to return home after the war. Upon his return, he lived out the rest of his life in the same home in Middle Park with his wife and four daughters.

It was a privilege to know this remarkable man and the memories I have of him will always stay with me.
