WWI Stories – Private Frank Bailey

Adam Bailey shares the story of his great-uncle Private Frank Bailey.

Private Frank Bailey No 1081 was born in Korong Vale on 28 February 1886. Frank had two other brothers who enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force and served at Gallipoli.

Both Frank’s parents were born in England. His father worked for Vic Railways, and Frank worked on the cable trams in Melbourne before joining the Penal & Goal Service as a warden.

He enlisted to serve on 8 October 1914 and trained at Broadmeadows, before embarking on the Orvieto on 21 October 1914. The Orvieto was moored at Mena, Egypt until deployment to Gallipoli.

Frank was wounded on landing on 25 April and died two days later on a hospital ship. He was buried at sea off Gallipoli. His name is honoured on the wall at the memorial at Lone Pine, plate number 42.

His brother Samuel, who was my grandfather, returned from Gallipoli and the Western Front. His brother Arthur was killed in France and is buried in the Vaulx Hill Cemetery.
